S. Bashirudin was born in Orissa in 1902, after completing his basic education he left his home in 1919 to join the Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College (now Aligarh Muslim University), unfortunately on reaching there the admission date was expired. He was determined to do something and it was this belief that helped him to join the institute as a Laboratory Assistant in Chemistry Department. In 1921 he joined the Library of Maulana Azad Library (then Lytton Library) on leave vacancy on the condition that he must learn library system.

An executive committee of the AMU sent him to Punjab University for library Training, after completing training he joined the university as Assistant Librarian in 1922. As he was having desire of pursuing higher education, he with his professional engagement pursued B.A and M.A Philosophy form AMU in 1923 and 1926 respectively. To enhance his professional qualification he in 1931 joined London College, University of London and got Certificate in Library Science in 1932. In 1937 he was promoted to Librarian of the Maulana Azad Library.

His contribution towards the development of Library will always be remembered, he got the skill of developing libraries by visiting national and international institutions.

In sixties he was requested to head the Delhi University Library which he accepted and served the institution with his heart and soul. With this he also remains associated with national and international library professional bodies for the development of Library Profession.

Govt. of India awarded him Padma Shri in 1976 for his valuable and deterministic contribution towards the Library Profession. Unfortunately he breathed his last on Oct. 22, 1984 and we lost an emerald of Indian Library Profession.
